DLC - Jaws of Haakon

Frostback Basin

Welcome to the first DLC for Dragon Age: Inquisition, The Jaws of Haakon. In this DLC, you'll be pitted against an Avvaar tribe known as the Jaws of Haakon while you try to uncover the truth behind the last Inquisitor's disappearance.

There are only a few achievements in this DLC and most of them are involved with just finishing off the main story of the DLC. While you can start this DLC before finishing off the game, I would highly recommend finishing the main story before moving onto this DLC. The difficulty level has really been jacked up and if you've finished the main storyline off on Nightmare mode, then you can play this on Casual if you'd like. This entire DLC is very frost based so if you are playing on a higher difficulty level you will really want your frost resistant gear and tonics. Going through this whole DLC you will pretty much uncover the entire map without even trying. There are no achievements related to completing the astrariums or gathering the shards from the oculariums in this DLC. These are optional. I have provided the astrarium solutions for those who choose to complete them. More treasure is always fun. Collecting the shards in this region will unlock a door here that grants your Inquisitor more frost resistance.

**One thing I want to point out early on here is that there is a door in the end temple of this area that you need a rogue to pick a lock for. I'm not 100% sure if you need the Deft Hands Inquisition Perk for this lock or not, but by now you should have picked up this inquisition perk anyway. So if for some reason you haven't gotten this perk, then I suggest getting Inquisition Influence from quests in this area and gain a level and make sure you unlock this perk. You've been warned.

So without further ado, let's jump into this DLC.

You'll start off at a camp talking to Scout Harding. When your done talking with her, you'll need to go and speak with Professor Kenric. You should now already have a few quests. From here, I would highly suggest just exploring the map and unlocking campsites for fast travel. Work on some the quests you have already to progress the story and make your way over to the East to Stone-Bear Hold. At Stone-Bear Hold, you will be introduced to Thane Svarah Sun-Hair. She'll send you on a quest to try and find their Hold-Beast Storvacker. One of the achievements in this DLC is impressing the inhabitants of Stone-Bear Hold:

You'll need to earn 5 points of influence with Stone-Bear Hold in order to earn this achievement. The achievement won't pop until the quest Hakkon Wintersbreath has been completed, but seeing as your going to be travelling all over the map to complete the DLC storyline, you might as well get working on this and get your 5 points. The following quests/actions each award 1 influence with Stone-Bear Hold:

  1. Send Skywatcher to Stone-Bear Hold: This is a War Table Operation that can be completed if you have recruited Skywatcher as an agent of the Inquisition in the Fallow Mire. This grants 1 influence with the hold.
  2. Send Relics of Tyrdda Bright-Ax: This is a War Table Operation that can be completed if you have previously done the War Table Operation - Locate Weapon of Tyrdda Bright-Axe. This grants 1 influence with the hold.
  3. Hakkon's Trials: This quest will begin once you have talked to Trainer Arrken in Stone-Bear Hold. You'll need to requisition an offering for the arena. Gather 2 silverite and 2 everite (quite abundant in the Frostback Basin) and use a requisition table to make the item. Once you have the offering go and speak with Trainer Arkken again and tell him you're ready to go to the arena. You'll have to defeat 3 waves of enemies. Once they are all defeated, return to Trainer Arkken to complete the quest and gain an influence point with the hold.
  4. A Father's Name: Depending on how you complete this quest, you will either gain 1 influence with the hold or no influence. To start this quest speak with Gyda Myrdotten at Stone-Bear Hold where she is preparing a body for burial. She'll tell you to go and talk with the Huntsman. The Huntsman will ask you to kill 3 fade-touched beasts so that proper burial rites may be performed on Caldan Enversen's body. Apparently, Caldan's son Finn was supposed to do this but he has been badly injured. You can speak with Finn in the hut right next to the Huntsman. Go and kill the 3 beasts and return to Stone-Bear Hold. You can choose to give the items to Finn so that he may retain his rite to being Caldan's son or give the items to the Huntsman to gain 1 influence with the hold.
  5. It Remains to be Seen: A good time to start this quest is when you are also doing the quest Storvacker Caged. Both quests take place in Swamp Kuldsdotten which is marked as #2 on the map. In the swamp are five enchanted skulls that are scattered around. Finding one of these skulls will begin the quest. The skulls are enclosed in triangular wood holders and found hanging from the stumps of the trees (to get to some of them you need to climb up on the tree branches). Find all 5 and return to Stone-Bear Hold to speak with the Augur. Light the veilfire in the Augur's hut and use the light to find 3 veilfire ruins by Gyda Myrdotten, where she is preparing the body. Unlock the codex entries and return to the Augur to complete the quest and earn 1 influence with the hold.
  6. In Exile: This quest is started by speaking with Sigrid in a hut marked at #1 on the map. Her hut is right next to an Ocularium. Sigrid has exiled herself from Stone-Bear Hold. Go and speak to the Auger to find out more about Sigrid. He tells you that she was supposed to perform a ritual to banish the spirit that has been residing with her and teaching her how to use magic since she was a little girl. If you head south from Stone-Bear hold you will come to the site where Sigrid was to perform her ritual. You find signs, by using the search function, that she never actually went through with performing the ritual. Return to speak with Sigrid about the failed ritual. You then have a choice of making her go and speak with Augur or recruit her as an agent for the Inquisition. I'm not sure if recruiting her grants you any influence with the hold. I've always sent her to speak to the Augur. Recruiting her gains you an agent and a war table operation.
  7. Up and Away: This quest is begun by speaking with Linna at the boat launch located at #3 on the map. This is also where you will need to come to cross over to the island. Linna is worried about her cousin Runa who she believes went climibng in the hills. Head to the quest markers and use your search function to find traces of Runa's passing through the area. Eventually you will find Runa and need to help her fight off some Lurkers. Runa will then tell you that she headed up to the hills to make a prayer and asks if you would like her to include you in her prayer. If you accept you will gain +1 to an attribute if you agree and stay and listen to the prayer. Really no point in disagreeing. You also get an influence point with the hold.

To progress the storyline of this DLC the following quests must be completed:

Jaws of Hakkon, The Basin Beckons, Worthy of Publication, What Yet Lingers, and On Ameridan's Trail.

These quests are all very straightforward and as always once you start them your objectives are shown on the map. During the quest On Ameridan's Trail you will reach a Tevinter Ruin and Scout Harding and Professor Kenric will meet up with you at the ruin. There is a floor puzzle that you can complete there to open two doors with some treasure. I've posted the solution to the floor puzzle in this youtube video:

When you finally head up the stairs out of the courtyard to progress with the quest you will need to open a door that is protected by a barrier. From the door if you head to the east you can go around the upper battlement area to find a veilfire. Grab the veilfire and touch the barrier with it to open the door. Head into the room to find more clues and use the veilfire on 2 runes in the room. You will then need to head back over to where you originally got the veilfire and pull a switch on the contraption over there. From here on you will be heading to the trail markers on your map and pulling the lever on each trail marker. When you pull the trail marker a beam of light will point to the next trail marker. When you get to the last trail marker you will be by another Tevinter Temple and the light from the marker will melt the ice that has been covering the temple's gates.

You will now need to go and speak with Thane Svarah Sun-Hair. She tells you Stone-Bear Hold will help you assault the gates. Make sure you are bringing along a rogue and a mage in your party for this next part. Tell her you're ready to go and you will be transported to the temple. Stone-Bear Hold warriors will climb the temple walls and open the gate for you. You need to deal with the enemies outside the gates and there are some more once you get inside. Clear all the enemies and check for some loot before entering the actual Old Temple. You will notice out here in this area there are Winter Shards that can be destroyed. There is an achievement for destroying all of the winter shards and lighting all of the fires within the temple. These ones in this outside area do not count however. You might as well destroy them anyway though. Now it's time to enter the Old Temple.

When you finally enter the temple, you will notice that you have a Warmth Gauge in the upper right corner of your screen. Unless you are standing next to a fire pit this warmth gauge will start to deplete. If it is completely drained you and your party members will start to take damage from the cold. So you need to move from section to section lighting fires along the way. The map shows you where the Fires that need to be lit are located and where the Winter Shards that need to be destroyed are. There are 7 fires to light and 8 Winter Shards to destroy. Start off by going to the left and lighting the first fire. Head north from there and light the next fire. From there you can jump down to the bottom floor and destroy your first Winter Shard in the hallway. From that shard you want to head East to another Fire where you will also need to use your search command to find a key. This key is needed to open the door to the second half of the temple. From that Fire and Key head North to where the locked door is that you need to use the key on. Don't go through that door yet though. If you look to the East you will see a pile of rocks that you can jump up to the second floor area to the East. Head up this secret area to find another fire to light. Now you can head back down and open that door. As soon as you go through the door there will be a fire to light. Head North and to the East where you will run into some enemies and 2 Winter Shards that need to be destroyed. Keep heading East to open the locked door with your Rogue and you will find another fire to light. Exit out of this room and continue on North. It is quite linear. You will run into another Winter Shard before coming to another Fire to light and yet another Winter Shard. If for some reason you missed any of these you can come back after you have cleared this temple and get them. When you leave this final fire and head North you will be on your way to the boss fight of this temple. There will be a supply cache that you should use. It's very important to save before you get to this boss. The boss should spawn 3 Winter Shards during the fight that you need to destroy. If for some reason you mess up and miss destroying a Shard during the boss fight for some reason at least you will be able to reload right before.

Kill the boss of the temple, a Revenant called Gurd Harofsen, along with a bunch of his goons. Make sure to destroy the three Winter Shards during this fight and this achievement should pop for you:

  • Firestarter

Destroy all the Winter Shards and light all the fires in the Old Temple.

When Gurd Harofsen has been defeated you will finally come face to face with Inquisitor Ameridan. He's been using a spell for 800 years to keep him and a dragon bound and locked in time. Now that the cultists have interfered his bindings are failing and he can no longer hold the dragon. He tasks you with recapturing his memories and destroying the dragon for good. Once your done speaking with Inquisitor Ameridan you'll pop this achievement:

  • Historian

Uncover the secrets of a legendary figure.

You will now need to go and kill the dragon, but first you can do the quest Where Once We Walked. There will be several places marked on the map that you need to travel to and recover memory orbs that are floating around. Each orb that you recover grants you multiple attribute points. It's definitely a quest worth completing. Once this is done head over to the area where the boat launch is to kill the dragon Hakkon and finish off this DLC.

Hakkon is like everything else in this DLC ... ICE BASED. Bring along the usual ice resistance stuff and fire staves if you're not playing on casual for some reason. Hakkon uses the wing draw in move, shoots ice at you, moves around a lot and calls in deepstalkers to help out. When his health gets low enough he'll fly over to a raised platform area and you'll have to follow him up there to finish him off. On a side note apparently killing Hakkon counts towards the killing 10 High Dragons achievement in case yours' glitched on you during the main campaign for some reason. Killing Hakkon awards you with the following achievement:

  • Winter's End

Dispel a myth of ancient days.

Now you need to head back to Stone-Bear Hold and speak with Thane Svarah Sun-Hair again. If you've earned your 5 points of influence with Stone-Bear Hold you will now get you final achievement:

  • Legend-Marked

Impress the Avvar of Stone-Bear Hold and gain their friendship.

Lastly once you're done talking with Thane Svarah Sun-Hair if you turn around you'll see Storvacker in the room. Clicking on Storvacker will result in a bit of a humorous scene. The Thane would like you to judge Storvacker. You can actually recruit Storvacker as an agent for the Inquisition now. If you do, there will be a War Table operation that you can complete afterwards.

That's it for this DLC Guide for Dragon Age: Inquisition - DLC (22)!
