-Why do you fight like this? Why?
You have no one! Nothing to fight for!-What do you mean?
-I can see it. You have no home, no family! No one you love!
-But... But... What difference does that make?
Is it wrong to fight when you've nothing to fight for?-It isn't natural.
-Then why do you fight?
-I fight for the one who saved me.
-Is... is that all?
-It's a truth that people live for!
-But, then, what does our meeting each other mean?
-Why? Why did I meet you now, after it's too late?
-If it's fate, it's a horrible one. Cruel.
-Nothing can come of our meeting each other. Nothing!
-But this is happening! You…

Review by Alex Holmes ★★★★★
The original Gundam storyline concludes in this feature film which features just about everything you can want from a Gundam movie. Despite being over 38 or so years old this movie still holds up just great. This is the Return of the King of the trilogy - everything falls into place and we get great high stakes battles at the end of the war for nothing less than the very future of mankind and freedom itself (bad guy Gihren Zabi essentially says "I want to be the next Adolf Hitler" upon the mention of his methods being Hitleresque).
Still, despite the obvious evil of the Gihren, the film refuses to show all the Zeon soldiers as bad guys and even…

Sayla's arc here feels indicative of an overall thematic trend of the series. We continue to see more of her backstory and her relationship with her brother Char and their father Zeon. Sayla disagrees with Char's perversion of their father's philosophy, which she feels he uses to justify his aggression and destruction. After a visit to the neutral colony Side 6, as the Earth Federation Forces leave to face another in a countless series of battles, Sayla reflects, "I've gotten used to this. I see that now." Presented with the contrast between her life with the EFF and the life of those living with Side 6, Sayla sees how she's become accustomed to a life of violence despite being against…

I can't imagine that watching this trilogy is in any way better watch watching the actual show, but I still enjoyed it for what it was and definitely made me wanna check the out the show.
I have no problem with long movies, but something tells me that in the case of Gundam it'll be easier for me to pay attention when the story is spaced out across multiple episodes reather than three two and a half hour long movies.

Encounters in Space is such a different beast when compared to the first two compilation films. Seemingly unsatisfied with the original series' conclusion, Encounters in Space instead opts for an almost remake approach, reanimating large chunks of the finale and making things far more smooth then they would be otherwise.
So easily, from a pure aesthetic and narrative approach, this is easily the definitive version of the story, and the best of the trilogy by default. It's a thrilling, powerful, and ultimately thought provoking film, even if it puts character development that was so crucial in the original series by the wayside in favour of glossier, more dynamic action scenes.
With operations underway for a final attack against Zeon,…

Listen to my podcast wherever you listen to podcasts by searching up "Screen Weens". Alternatively you can click here to watch it on Youtube. The attached episode covers all of the Mobile Suit Gundam Compilation Film Trilogy.
While it has its problems still, it feels the most simialr to the show. In addition the extra moments of animation really add a lot to the overall battles and the ending is just as phenomenal as ever. It still doesn't hold its own in comparison to the show, but it's an excellent movie.

The subtitle Encounters in Space is about as apt as it possibly gets. This film that concludes the abridging of the anime series, spends it's entire time locked into a large scale space battle. In something fairly realistic for an anime, the battles actually fizzle out and both sides fall back for down time until they can get started again.
Despite the stop start pacing it actually feels like the least spliced together bunch of episodes movie and more about a singular A to B narrative. Despite the knowledge this franchise goes in in further incarnations with other wars decades later, there's definitely a very climactic feeling to this movie. You get the sense, despite one side constantly pulling out…
