It is a small -like animal, prized for its beautiful soft fur, which is one of the choicest furs sold today. It lives in and near streams, lakes and swamps. It is 1 to 2 feet long and has a round, almost hairless tail, nearly as long as its body. It is an aquatic rodent which lives in burrows close to the water. It has a luxuriant coat, with coarse guard hairs, protecting a fine soft underfur.

It is an excellent swimmer aided by its webbed hind feet. It breeds rapidly, may have nine young in a litter and feeds on the leaves and roots of aquatic plants. The coypu originated in Central and South America but now is found in southern United States and many other parts of the world. The breed is now well established in parts of Louisiana and some other states. They seem to thrive in the same areas as muskrats.

They are considered pests by farmers because they eat many kinds of green vegetables and damage crops. 12-21 (Nancy Neuren of Columbus, Georgia, wins a prize for this question.
